DeepMind Technologies, a London-based artificial intelligence company (with research centers in Canada, France, and the United States), was founded in September 2010 (as a start-up by Demis Hassabis, Shane Legg, and Mustafa Suleyman). It was then acquired by Google in 2014. Thereafter, it became a wholly owned subsidiary of Alphabet Inc in 2015. The AI technology adopted by this company is through the use of a neural network modeled to learn playing video games. Deepmind can mimic the short-term memory of humans, by enabling its “Neural Turing machine” (i.e. the neural network) to access external memory like a conventional Turing machine. The enhanced ability of the AlphaGo program of Google Deepmind defeated Lee Sedol, a professional Go player and the world champion, in a five-game match in 2016. The other version, AlphaZero (a more general program, that uses reinforcement learning), defeated the most powerful programs playing go, chess, and Japanese chess shogi.

Litterati is an online project in which users (mostly private individuals) collect and correctly dispose of waste lying around on the street and in nature, and document the whole thing using a mobile phone app. Litterati was founded by the American Jeff Kirschner to combat the worldwide problem of carelessly discarded waste. The movement began on Instagram in 2012, when Kirschner photographed a cigarette butt and published it on Instagram in combination with the hashtag Litterati (#Litterati). Kirschner noticed that his #Litterati was used by more people and came up with the idea of developing a special app for it. The first version of the app was released on August 16, 2015. Litterati's job is to identify problem areas where there is a lot of waste and to determine which types and brands of waste are most common. Litterati would like to use the data collected in collaboration with companies and organizations to find more sustainable solutions (Wikipedia).
